With the high gas prices and the kids being out from school, there is a need for a fun fulfilled day of entertainment out in the sun. There is only one thing I can think about. It is jumping into the cooling water of the Terrapin Creek.
The Terrapin Outdoor Center has been open for 13 years. The owners Mike and Phil Warren have been taking people onto this relaxing and peaceful creek for many summers.
Since there was a drought last year, the creek was closed due to not having enough water. This year Mike said there has been a definite change in water levels from last year. Both Mike and Phil feel blessed this year that they are able to take people back onto this beautiful creek. Due to the increase of water this year, there has been a major increase of people floating down this scenic creek.
The Terrapin Creek is eight miles of fun in the sun. The twisting and winding of the creek has beautiful scenery. The water is clear and cooling to the body if one decides to take a dip into the water. Also, on this lovely trip you can see many Terrapin turtles, for which the creek is known.
If you are looking for something to do during the hot summer weekdays or weekends travel down highway 9 to the Terrapin Outdoor Center. It is open Tuesday thru Sunday from 9am-5pm. At the store you can rent from a variety of canoes and kayaks. A two-person canoe can be rented for $40 and a one-person kayak for $20. Life jackets and paddles are included in the price of rentals of canoes or kayaks.
From 9am to 12pm there is a "putt-in" time, which means someone will drive you to the "upper" part of the creek and drop you off. From there you’ll travel down the creek back towards the Terrapin Outdoor Center. It takes four to five hours to travel down this beautiful creek. There is no guide. You are simply on your own and travel at your own pace.
There are many spots to stop and have a relaxed picnic by the creek. Throughout the creek, there are swimming holes where you can swim. Also, don’t forget to bring your fishing pole! There are many fishing holes along the creek. It is enjoyable for all ages and great for beginner level. They are open until Labor Day. So if your looking for a fun filled day of sun and something the whole family can enjoy come on down to The Terrapin Creek Center.
