Most area teams remain steady in latest ASWA baseball, softball poll

With area games now in full swing throughout the state in baseball and softball, teams are looking toward the postseason. For several Cherokee County area teams, they’re also seeking to improve their standing in the Alabama Sportswriters Association polls.

The latest poll was released on Thursday, with not much movement for those five area teams who are ranked.

In Class 4A baseball, Cherokee County (14-1) suffered its first loss of the season to Area 12 rival Alexandria on Wednesday in a 6-5 setback in 8 innings. The Warriors remain at No. 4 in this week’s rankings.

The two teams are scheduled to battle again today at Alexandria at 4:30 p.m.

Class 1A Spring Garden (12-6) was also in action against Area 12 rival Cedar Bluff in a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Panthers dropped both games, 9-2 and 9-6. Spring Garden also dropped one spot in the latest rankings to No. 10.

The Panthers are scheduled to play at Gaylesville in a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Spring Garden’s softball team remains at No. 2. The Lady Panthers (8-3) are second to Kinston (11-2) in the 1A softball poll. They are scheduled to play at Gaylesville on Thursday.

Speaking of Gaylesville (10-4), the Lady Trojans remain at No. 10 after Tuesday’s 11-1 loss at Spring Garden.

In Class 4A softball, the Cherokee County Lady Warriors (16-4) slipped one spot to No. 3 in this week’s rankings. The Lady Warriors lost on Tuesday at Alexandria (16-7), the new No. 1 team in 4A.

Cherokee County is scheduled to play at Class 6A Grissom on Thursday beginning at 4:30 p.m.
