Weekend Spring Sports Roundup: Cedar Bluff baseball team sweeps Piedmont

CEDAR BLUFF – Curtis Abernathy took the mound for the first time this baseball season since surgery on Saturday against visiting Piedmont.

His season debut was a successful one.

Abernathy picked up the win, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts in Class 1A, No. 9 Cedar Bluff’s 12-2 win over Class 3A, No. 6 Piedmont.

Cedar Bluff (8-4) completed the doubleheader sweep with a 7-2 win in the second game.

In game one, Austin McCullough entered in relief for Abernathy and allowed four hits with four strikeouts.

At the plate, Dalton Cosby had two doubles and two RBIs. Abernathy had a double and two RBIs. Levi Mintz had two hits. Keaton Kilgro doubled and had two RBIs.

In the second game, C.J. Gilreath’s 3-run homer in the fifth inning broke a 2-all tie. Mintz struck out eight to earn the win. He also went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Caleb Clark added a hit and an RBI.

Spring Garden 15, Faith Christian 4

ANNISTON – Class 1A, No. 6 Spring Garden struck for 12 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 15-4 baseball win at Faith Christian on Saturday.

Josh Hale earned the win for the Panthers (10-4). He gave up one earned run and struck out four. Hale also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a 2-run homer.

Grant Benefield was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs. Lukas Crawford was also 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Will Ivey, Will Penton, Will Westbrook, Jake Grogan, Andrew McLarty and Dawson Broome all had hits for the Panthers.

Sand Rock 17, Gaston 2

GASTON – The Class 2A, No. 6 Sand Rock Wildcats rolled to a 17-2 win over Gaston on Thursday for an Area 13 victory.

Ethan Jimmerson had four hits, including a double and three RBIs, to help the Wildcats improve to 6-4 on the year. Austin Godshall had three hits and an RBI, while Dustin Chambers had three hits. Dylan Mackey had two hits and two RBI. Ethan Holcombe, Isaac Arnold and Zane Farrar each had two hits and an RBI. Chandler Mackey added a double and two RBIs.

Dylan Mackey earned the win after striking out three allowing three hits in 2 1/3 innings. Austin Chambers entered in relief and stuck out four while allowing just one hit.

Middle School Baseball

Cherokee Black 6, Sand Rock 4

Sand Rock 12, Cherokee Gold 2

SAND ROCK – Centre Middle School split a pair of middle school baseball games at Sand Rock on Friday. The Warrior Black team won the first game 6-4, but Sand Rock rallied to take the second game 12-2.

Mason Rodger earned the win in the first game. Jacob Graves, Jy Lockridge, and Caleb Ransum all recorded a hit for Warrior Black. Runs were scored by Graves, Lockridge, Cade Gossett, Anthony Dingler, Quartez Henderson and Zae Wright.

Lockrige, Ransum and Gossett had an RBI each.

Brayden Carver, Perry Stevens and Brett Jackson all had a pair of hits for Sand Rock in the first game. Gavin Battles, Dylan Hand, Austin Hunter and Jansen Alexander each had a hit. Alexander’s hit was a double.

In the second game, Alexander picked up the win for Sand Rock. Carver and Stevens had a double and a single. Brett Jackson had a double. Battles and Race Clausen both had singles.

Kyle Burgess, Chris Ray, Caleb Gravett, and Hunter Vincent all recorded a hit for Warrior Gold. The two runs were scored by Burgess and Jy Lockridge.

Softball

Cherokee County 7, Alexandria 1

CENTRE – Tori Davis allowed just one hit and struck out 13 to lead Class 4A, No. 4 Cherokee County to a 7-1 softball victory over Alexandria on Thursday.

Darbie Rosser went 2 for 2 with a run scored for the Lady Warriors. Molly Brewer went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Davis went 1 for 4 with three RBI, Madison Millsaps went 1 for 3 with two runs scored, and Kayle Moon had a hit and an RBI.
