Sand Rock sophomore guard Courtney Rowe earned the Most Valuable Player honor. She averaged 8.9 points, 4.1 assists, 5.6 rebounds and 5.0 steals per game this season.
Joining Rowe from Sand Rock is junior forward Madison Smith, freshman guard Emily Langley and senior forward Amber Ashley.
Gaston had three selections in Abby Elrod, Kentara Blackwell and Kierra Porter.
Westbrook Christian and West End had two selections apiece. Representing the Lady Warriors are Abby Lockridge and Chloe Saunders. Morgan Cleveland and Brittany Self were selected from West End.
Former Spring Garden standout Tara Mullinax recently completed her first basketball season at Berry. Mullinax, a 5-foot-11 freshman forward, scored 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the Lady Vikings’ 66-59 loss to Millsaps on Feb. 23 in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament semifinals.
Berry finished the year at 13-14.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association and Birmingham Mayor William Bell, Sr., announced last Wednesday that the AHSAA Final 48 state basketball championships will continue to be played at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) Arena through the 2020 season.
The new agreement between the AHSAA and the City of Birmingham extends the current contract, which runs through 2015, for five more years.
Last week’s state basketball championships were the 90th year for boys and 36th year for girls. Until 1994 the tournaments were played at different sites on different dates.
Weiss Lake in Leesburg will be hosting a fishing tournament in the Crappie USA circuit on Saturday.
Anglers will be fishing for a 7-fish limit of crappie, which could net them a check along with the opportunity to advance to the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year’s classic will be held Oct. 23-26, 2013 on Kentucky Lake at Paris, Tennessee.
A pre-tournament seminar will be held on March 8 at the FEMA Building on Hwy. 411 Industrial Blvd. in Leesburg. Sign up will begin at 5 p.m., with the meeting and a National Sponsor Field Test Product Drawing starting at 7 p.m. This seminar is open to the public.
The tournament weigh-in will be held on Saturday at the Leesburg Landing beginning at 3 p.m.
