The Alabama Bass Fishing Association is dedicated to the recruitment and successful development of tomorrow’s future anglers to excel in the areas of leadership, personal, professional, and educational development while fostering an appreciation of the great outdoors and the love of bass fishing as a sport through competitive tournaments, activities, and contests. The Association promotes the necessary skills and professional experience of our state’s student anglers to position them for future leadership positions and the friendly spirit of competition that they will need in later life. We also encourage the student angler to protect and promote the preservation of the sport of fishing’s natural resources, participate in community conservation projects and initiatives, and provide a social atmosphere for interaction with peers in a competitive environment that will build confidence for the future. The Association’s programs and activities are designed to get our youth involved in character building, enhanced appreciation of the natural recreational resources, and teach them responsibility and duty to their team, their school, and their fellow anglers. Our members are committed to bringing recognition to the sport of bass fishing as a professionally organized and recognized student angler sport. The Cherokee County Commission, Regions Bank, Cherokee Electric Coop and Lanny’s will sponsor a meal on Friday night at the registration for all the student anglers and their sponsor. Little River Canyon National Preserve will host a free Beginning Birding Walk at the Little River Canyon Center on Saturday, February 16, 2013 from 10 to 11:30 AM. The program coincides with Great Backyard Bird Count. This will be the first time the park has counted birds for this event. If you would like to learn how to recognize common birds or just get out for a short walk, join us in the Preserve, your most scenic local backyard. Park Ranger Larry Beane will lead the easy walk through several habitats and teach techniques to identify birds. The Great Backyard Bird Count, a 4-day long annual count of birds, is now global. You may count birds from February 15- 18, wherever you are for as short as 15 minutes or as long as you like. You may enter a photo competition and bird sighting lists by locations. This gives scientists data about bird populations and which birds are in specific places. Those who want to participate in the Great Backyard Bird Count in other parts of the park or at home can download the park bird list and other park animal lists at http://www.nps.gov/liri . These are also available at the Canyon Center. The Preserve has recorded 145 species of birds.
