Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver met with the board in a previous meeting to request that something be done to enhance school safety through a collaborative effort.
The board approved dedicating the playground at Cherokee County Career and Technology Center in memory of Molly Barnes who passed away in 2012.
During the meeting, Jayne Davis unveiled the sign naming the playground in memory of teacher Molly Barnes, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident.
Welding students at Cherokee County Career and Technology Center, under the direction of Instructors Ricky Mackey and Kim Nichols made the sign.
An official dedication ceremony for the playground will be held possibly in the spring.
The board also approved $5,000 allocations for science and/or math instructional supplies or equipment for each of the five high schools, including Cedar Bluff High School,, Cherokee County High School, Gaylesville High School, Sand Rock High School and Spring Garden High School.
In other business, the board:
-Approved $,6,700 to purchasing fencing for the softball field at Cedar Bluff School.
-Approved lifting the temporary travel policy/reinstating Travel Policy G-33.
-Approved the destruction/demolition of the house located at 3420 Spring Street in Cedar Bluff.
-Approved the following to be added to Cherokee County Career and Technology Center’s School Advisory Council: Joann Oden, Nancy Bryan, Rev. Lynn Hughston and John Dow VanPelt.
-Approved the minutes from the Jan. 17, 2013 meeting.
-Approved bills for payment.
-Approved out of state travel for Jayne Davis to attend the National Association of Federal Programs Administrators (NAFEPA) Conference in Washington, D.C. April 14-18, 2013-funded by Title funds and for Donna Norris and Stacey Mackey, elementary teachers at Sand Rock School, who will attend the Difficult Students-How to Unlock Their Potential Seminar in Atlanta, Ga. March 4, 2013, to be funded by Title funds.
