Cedar Bluff boys make big jump back into latest ASWA basketball rankings

Two of the hottest high school boys basketball teams around the state are from Class 1A, Area 10, and both made moves in the latest Alabama Sportswriters Association basketball rankings, released on Thursday.

The Cedar Bluff Tigers (17-7) returned to the poll for the first time since Dec. 6, coming in at No. 6.

The Tigers have won eight in a row and nine of their last 10. Their lone loss of the new year came on Jan. 8 at Collinsville (23-2), which moved up a spot this week to No. 2.

The Panthers, who trail only top-ranked St. Jude (21-5), have won their last nine contests. Their only two losses this season have come to Class 4A Hokes Bluff (16-8).

Cedar Bluff and Collinsville are both back in action on Thursday. The Tigers travel to Centre to face the Cherokee County Warriors, while the Panthers host Valley Head.

In this week’s girls rankings, there were no changes for local teams.

The Cherokee County Lady Warriors (19-6) maintained their No. 10 ranking in Class 4A, while the Sand Rock Lady Wildcats (18-6) held firm at No. 9 in Class 2A.

The Lady Warriors host Cedar Bluff on Thursday, while the Lady Wildcats travel to Spring Garden.

Two other girls teams continue to receive nominations in the poll: Class 3A Piedmont (20-6) and Class 1A Collinsville (20-4).

Piedmont hosts Alexandria on Thursday, while Collinsville entertains Valley Head.
