Little changes for area teams in latest ASWA basketball rankings

With the end of the regular season nearing and area tournaments on the brink of beginning early next month, the latest Alabama Sportswriters Association basketball poll was released Thursday.

There were little changes for area teams this week in their respective classes.

The only area boys team that continues to be ranked is the Collinsville Panthers (21-2). They maintained their No. 3 ranking in the Class 1A poll, trailing only top-ranked St. Jude (18-5) and No. 2 Keith (16-8).

The DeKalb County Tournament champions are set to host Class 5A Etowah on Friday.

One other Class 1A boys team received consideration for this week’s poll: the Cherokee County Tournament champion Cedar Bluff Tigers (14-7).

Cedar Bluff travels to Spring Garden on Friday in a rematch of Saturday’s Cherokee County Tournament final, won by the Tigers 60-59.

Despite winning their third straight Cherokee County Tournament championship last weekend, the Cherokee County Lady Warriors (17-4) fell one spot to No. 10 in this week’s Class 4A girls poll.

The Lady Warriors travel to Etowah on Thursday and host Glencoe on Friday, when the Lady Warrior 1992 and 1993 championship teams will be honored.

Cherokee County Tournament runner-up Sand Rock (16-5) maintained its No. 9 ranking in the Class 2A girls poll. Sand Rock hosts Glencoe on Thursday.

Two other area girls teams continued to receive consideration in Class 3A Piedmont (18-6) and Class 1A Collinsville (18-4).

Piedmont travels to White Plains on Friday, while DeKalb County Tournament champion Collinsville hosts Etowah on Thursday.
