MRS. JOSEPHINE COUEY JENNINGS

Mrs. Josephine Couey Jennings, 83 of Centre, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2013, at her residence. Josephine, better known to her grandchildren as “Nanny,” her children as “Mom,” and to all others as “Jo,” was born in Floyd County, Georgia. and grew up the eldest of 9 children in Rome. She met her husband while serving as church pianist at Cedar Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Jennings married Paul Andrew Jennings on November 10, 1951. They raised their four daughters and one son on their dairy farm outside of Centre. Even while raising five children and helping her husband run the family business, Jo developed quite a name for herself as a caterer and master-baker. Her wedding cakes in particular became an anticipated feature at many receptions in the area. After the death of her husband in 1998, Jo continued to be an active member of the First Baptist Church in Centre, the Centre Lions club, and served on the board of the Cherokee County Electric Co-op.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 20, 2013 at the Perry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Daniel Farley officiating. The committal service was held Monday, January 21, 2013 at Jennings Chapel Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Paul and Josephine Jennings Memorial Scholarship fund at Union State Bank. Mrs. Jennings is survived by two brothers, Doug Couey and Scott Couey, three sisters, Glenda Brooks, Hellon Whorton, and Jean Odom; and her five children and their families: Janice Jennings (Bill Rhyme) and their four children; Phyllis Jones (Randy Jones) and their three children; Paula Chesnut (David Chesnut), their four children and one great grandchild; Greg Jennings (Virginia Jennings) and their three children; and Marcia Sewell (Hal Sewell) and their three children, and several nieces and nephews.
