Three area basketball teams ranked in latest ASWA poll

The Collinsville Panthers (15-2), Cherokee County Lady Warriors (13-4) and Sand Rock Lady Wildcats (12-4) are all off to strong second-half basketball starts in the new year. Those three teams represent the area in the first Alabama Sportswriters Association basketball rankings of 2013.

The latest poll was released on Thursday.

Collinsville’s boys maintained their No. 3 ranking from the last poll before Christmas. The Panthers host Sylvania on Thursday.

In the girls rankings, Cherokee County also held their No. 8 ranking from the last Class 4A poll. The Lady Warriors were tabbed the top seed Wednesday evening of next week’s Cherokee County Tournament, but before they try to earn their third straight county title, they’ll host Area 11 rival Alexandria on Friday.

After flirting with being ranked the past several Class 2A girls polls, the Sand Rock Lady Wildcats crack this week’s poll at No. 10. The Lady Wildcats, winners of seven of their last eight games and the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Cherokee County Tournament, host Area 11 rival West End on Friday.

Two other girls teams received nominations for this week’s poll: Class 3A Piedmont (14-5) and Class 1A Collinsville (12-5). Piedmont hosts Weaver on Friday, while Collinsville entertains Sylvania on Thursday.
