Basketball Roundup: Lady Warriors outlast Hokes Bluff, 49-38

CENTRE – The Class 4A, No. 8 Cherokee County Lady Warriors had three players score in double figures to claim a 49-38 basketball victory over Area 11 rival Hokes Bluff on Tuesday.

Jessen Burk led the charge for the Lady Warriors (13-4, 3-1) with 16 points, including 11 in the second half. Tori Davis added 15 points and Chelsea Ray finished with 13 points.

Keisha Chapman and Hannah Evans led Hokes Bluff (10-8, 2-3) with 12 points apiece. Carlie Shields contributed 10 points.

Cherokee County led 8-4 at the end of the first quarter and held a 23-16 advantage at halftime. The Lady Warriors led 38-30 heading into the fourth quarter.

In the varsity nightcap, JoJo Diamond netted 23 points and Tony Pruitt added 18, but they weren’t enough to lead the Warriors past the Eagles. Cherokee County fell by the final of 72-58. The loss dropped the Warriors to 4-13 overall and 1-3 in Area 11 action.

Seven-foot-2 junior center Isaac Haas led Class 4A, No. 8 Hokes Bluff (13-4, 3-1) with a game-high 25 points. Brad Robertson added 11 points and Nicholas Woodruff finished with 10.

Both Warrior teams get back in action on Friday when they host Alexandria beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Sand Rock sweeps at Gaston

GADSDEN – The Sand Rock Wildcats swept a pair of varsity basketball games Tuesday at Gaston.

In girls action, Emily Langley netted 11 points and had three assists to lead the Lady Wildcats to a 54-33 victory.

Madison McCullough and Madison Smith both contributed nine points for Sand Rock (12-4, 4-0 Class 2A, Area 11). Smith also posted seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Shelley Sonaty added eight points, three boards, a steal and a blocked shot. Courtney Rowe came away with six points, eight steals, five rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot. Amber Ashley finished with five points, three boards, a steal and a blocked shot.

In boys action, Chase Garrett scored 11 points and Devin Howard added 10 points to lead the Wildcats to a 48-32 victory. Sand Rock improved to 8-9 and 3-1 in Area 11 with the win.

Both Sand Rock teams are back in action on Friday when they host West End beginning at 6 p.m.

Gaylesville splits with Coosa Christian

GAYLESVILLE – Taylor Tomlin topped all scorers with 25 points in leading the Gaylesville Lady Trojans to a 49-19 basketball victory over Coosa Christian on Tuesday.

Lauren Hammett added 14 points for the Lady Trojans (5-8, 2-4 Class 1A, Area 10).

In boys action, the Trojans fell to the Conquerors by the final of 43-32.

Gable Lawson led the way for Gaylesville (2-11, 0-6 Class 1A, Area 10) with 13 points. Blaine Broome added eight points.

Both Gaylesville teams will be back in action on Thursday when they host Pleasant Valley beginning at 6 p.m.
