It’s tournament time in the high school basketball season, with county basketball tournaments about to get underway for all area teams.
The seeding meeting for the 2013 Cherokee County Basketball Tournament will be Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. at the Gridiron restaurant in Centre. The tournament is set for Jan. 17-19 at the Gadsden State-Cherokee Arena.
Last year, Cherokee County’s girls and Sand Rock’s boys were tabbed as the tournament’s top seeds. The Lady Warriors went on to win their second straight county title with a 44-30 win over Spring Garden. The Warrior boys held off Sand Rock 66-60 to earn their first county crown since 2010.
On Sunday, the Calhoun County coaches held their tournament seeding meeting. The Piedmont Lady Bulldogs were seeded third behind Anniston and Jacksonville. Piedmont will play No. 14 Wellborn at 4 p.m. next Monday at Jacksonville State University’s Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Piedmont-Wellborn girls winner takes on the winner of No. 6 Ohatchee-No. 11 Weaver next Thursday at 4 p.m.
In the boys bracket, Oxford took the top spot with Piedmont holding the No. 9 position. The Bulldogs open against No. 8 Jacksonville on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The winner faces Oxford next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
Both Collinsville teams have been selected as the top seeds in the DeKalb County Tournament. That tournament begins on next Monday and continues through Jan. 19 at the Fort Payne Civic Center.
The Panther boys will be going for their third tournament championship this season. They’ve already won the Cherokee Invitational (Dec. 22) and the Asbury Christmas Tournament (Dec. 29) and open DeKalb County Tournament play against No. 8 Ider next Monday at 8 p.m.
Collinsville’s girls also open tournament play against Ider next Tuesday at 8 p.m.

Sand Rock senior catcher Kelsey Hayes is expected to sign a softball scholarship with Snead State Community College next Thursday.
Last season, Hayes batted .278 with six doubles, 12 walks and 10 RBIs for the Lady Wildcats (28-13).

The monthly senior golf tournament will be held on Monday at the Cherokee County Country Club in Centre.
Lafayette, Ga. hosts one the first Monday of each month, while the Cherokee County Country Club has one the second Monday. Pine Hill in Anniston has the third Monday, and Stonebridge in Rome has the fourth Monday. The tournaments are for the 50-and-over crowd.
The price is $30 per person, which includes lunch, and there will be more than one flight. Starting time is 10 a.m. The tournament is a two-person scramble.
