Fast start lifts Sand Rock girls past Asbury

SAND ROCK – The Sand Rock Lady Wildcats went on a 16-0 run in the first quarter and went on to capture a 57-22 basketball victory over Asbury on Tuesday.

Amber Ashley led the way for Sand Rock (9-3) with 14 points. Emily Langley added 10 points and five assists. Madison McCullough, Leslie Mackey and Shelley Sonaty each had eight points.

Josie Pelham led Asbury with eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

Sand Rock built a 31-9 lead at halftime and led 43-18 at the end of three quarters.

Sand Rock opens the Cherokee Invitational Tournament on Thursday at 6:45 p.m. against the Cherokee County Lady Warriors at Cherokee County High School.

Asbury boys 56, Sand Rock boys 44

SAND ROCK – Jonathan Young scored a game-high 23 points, including a 10-of-14 performance from the free-throw line, to lead Asbury to a 56-44 basketball win at Sand Rock on Tuesday.

Dylan Mackey led the Wildcats (5-5) with 14 points. Dakota Mabry added 12 points and Chase Garrett finished with seven points.

Riley Oliver netted 15 points for Asbury (6-7). Zack Banks finished with 10 points.

The game was tight throughout three quarters. It was tied at 11 at the end of the first quarter and tied at 16 at halftime. Sand Rock held a 31-28 lead at the end of the third quarter, but Asbury went on a 28-13 run in the fourth for the final.

Sand Rock plays Cherokee County in the nightcap of the Cherokee Invitational Tournament on Thursday at Cherokee County High School. Tip off is set for 8 p.m.
