FOR DEDICATED SERVICE. Cherokee County Commission Chairman/probate Judge Melvyn Salter (right) reads a resolution in honor of Debbie Bankson (left) who is retiring after almost 35 years of service with the Cherokee County Probate Judge's office during a recent commission meeting.
One of the first items on the agenda was a resolution honoring retiring Probate Chief Clerk Debbie Bankson. Bankson was hired as a clerk in the Probate Office in July 1977 and was appointed Chief Clerk in October 1984. Chairman Salter said in reading the resolution that Bankson has served as an exemplary employee. She has continued to receive training to keep abreast of the workings of the Probate Office. Salter also commended her for her years of community service. The resolution was unanimously approved.
A resolution was also approved recognizing Agents Shawn Rogers and Joe Johnson of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department. The resolution stated that they were being honored for their acts above and beyond the call of duty in order to protect and provide safety for the citizens of Cherokee County. In working with others, they were able to achieve this outstanding commendation. Sheriff Shaver and Commander Clifton presented them with the General Commendation Medal of Achievement as many friends, family members and co-workers look on.
Chairman Salter announced that the Park and Recreation Board appointments/reappointments for the unexpired term of Gary Banister who resigned and 2 members whose terms expire December 31, 2012 would be made at the January 14, 2013 meeting.
Also at this same meeting, the appointments/reappointments for 3 members of the Cherokee County Health Care Authority will be made.
In other business, the Commission:
-Approved the T-Mobile lease assignment consent.
-Approved the 2013 holiday schedule.
-Approved the County Highway Department to continue with the ATRIP program involving roads and forego the RAMP program.
-Approved the purchase of Motor Grader HDM2 in the amount of $247,623 to be financed by Bancorp South and payments from the Highway Sales Tax Fund.
-Approved excess land redemptions to Jack F. Mackey in the amounts of $133.34 and $133.34.
-Approved the Agency Agreement with the Alabama Secretary of State to comply with Act 95-769 in order for the county to receive reimbursement for some expenses.
-Approved an expenditure of $4,200 to Cap Risk for actuarial services regarding post-employment insurance coverage until the retiree reaches age 65 or becomes Medicare eligible.
-Declared nine patrol cages from the Sheriff’s Department as surplus property
-Upon the request of Sheriff Shaver, approved an extended contract with Southern Health Partners
Before adjourning the meeting, Chairman Salter extended his appreciation to the present and past Commissioners with whom he has worked these past 6 years and expressed his appreciation for several things that have been accomplished for the county.
He also thanked the various departments and department heads and staff for the cooperative efforts they have displayed to him as Probate Judge and Commission Chairman.
In closing, he issued some challenges he feels will make Cherokee County a better place to live and work.
