NEW BOARD IN SESSION. During the Tuesday, Nov. 20 meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Education, the board elected a chairman, vice chairman and also welcomed two new board members who begin their term of office including Suzanne Bishop in District Three and Mark Green in District Four. Board Member Mark Gossett nominated Lisa McKissick to serve as board chairperson for the coming year because of her seniority. The board unanimously approved the motion.
The board then elected Lynn Rochester to serve as vice chairperson.
Board members, upon the recommendation of Dr. Trina Wood, acting superintendent, Cherokee County Schools, agreed to sign the Certificate of Affirmation of School Board Member.
“This is required by the School Board Governments Improvement Act of 2012 and I am assuming all of you have had the opportunity to read the requirements,” said Dr. Wood.
The seven affirmations, as read by Dr. Wood, are as follows:
-Each decision, action and vote I take or make as a member of the school board, shall be based solely on the needs and interests of students or the system.
-That I will take or make no decision, action or vote to serve or promote my personal, political or interest.
-Each decision, action and vote I take or make shall be based on the educational interests of the school system as a whole.
-That I will consider the views of all members of the board and the superintendent before making a decision or taking an action or any measure or proposal before the board.
-That except to the extent otherwise provided by law, I shall take formal action only upon the written recommendation of and in consultation with the superintendent and that I may not individually or jointly attempt to direct or corrupt the operations of the school system in a manner inconsistent with the discharge of the statutory functions and responsibilities of the superintendent.
-That I shall actively promote public support for the school system and sound statewide system of public education and shall endorse ideas, initiatives and programs that are designed to improve the quality of public education for all students
-That I shall attend scheduled meetings and actively participate in school system functions, activities and training programs that promote quality boardsmanship unless good cause is shown.
The board also approved the financial report as presented. Dr. Wood said that a work session is planned in the near future for the benefit of the new board members to help them better understand the financial reports and how to read them.
The board approved supplemental educational service tutoring contracts for Sand Rock School with the following providers: A: Rocket Learning; B/ 1Kid1 Computer, Inc.; C. ATS Project Success, Inc. and D. Brain Hurricane, LLC.
“As you recall, those of you who were at the last board meeting, Sand Rock School is under school improvement and they are required to have vendors to provide supplemental services to students,” said Dr. Wood.
“We received four more contracts that parents have chosen as possible vendors and at this time I recommend 11 A, B, C and D.”
In other business, the board:
-Approved Cherokee County High School’s request for funds from the City of Centre of $2,800 to help purchase science lab supplies.
-Approved bills for payment.
The next meeting of the Cherokee County Board of Education is Tuesday, Dec. 4, beginning at 5 p.m.
