Jacksonville State head football coach Jack Crowe announced today that standout quarterback Jayce Barber has signed to play football for the Gamecocks in 2013.

Barber, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound quarterback from Columbia High School in Lake City, Fla., will enroll at Jacksonville State in January and will participate in spring practice with the Gamecocks.

“Jayce was our top choice as a player, student and leader,” Crowe said. “He will help give us some depth at our quarterback position and having the opportunity to have him go through spring practice with us will be a tremendous asset.”

Barber has passed for 1,161 yards and 11 touchdowns after completing 78 of 155 passes and just two interceptions. He added 126 yards on 32 carries on the ground through 10 regular-season games as Columbia High has posted a 9-1 record.

Barber will lead the fifth-ranked Tigers into the first round of the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 6A state playoffs this Friday night against Bartram Trail.

Jacksonville State (6-4) will play its final game of the season on Saturday against No. 7 Florida. The game can been seen outside the State of Florida live on ESPN3 and will begin at noon central time.
