The Family Care Center at 1014 West Main St. includes a Thrift Store open to the public Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Family Care Center helps others by giving clothing, food and possibly hope to families in their time of need. The Center asks for your help by supporting its thrift stores. There are currently three locations, the one in Centre, another at 5511 Main St. in Hokes Bluff and another in Cedar Bluff. The Center is currently helping more than 100 families per week and thanks the community for its continued support. Director is Cindy McGinnis.

The Cherokee County Commission meets at 10 a.m. in the Cherokee County Administration Building. The work session begins at 9 a.m.

All retirees of the Cherokee County Education Retirees Association are invited to attend the Wednesday, Nov. 14 meeting, which will begin at 11 a.m. at Lanny’s Restaurant. Guest Speaker will be Sheriff Jeff Shaver with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office who will address the importance of the “Dot Program” and how it affects most people as they approach their Golden Years. While no senior citizen looks to be in a car accident, the following information will be quite helpful. There will be a sticker on the back window of your car and that will tell the police or paramedics that you have vital information about yourself in the glove compartment. Several members mentioned that when they travel, their spouse is more than likely with them. If that’s the case, make a list of medications that he or she is on-their doctor and a phone number. It is important that you bring with you a copy of all prescribed medications that you are taking-this includes the strength or dosage you take and when you take it. Also on this paper include the doctor’s name, address and phone number. Make sure that you include OTC (over the counter) medicines too. Bring your spouse to the meeting and you can both have your picture taken together. List a name and telephone number of a person to contact in case of an emergency. A photographer will be present to take your picture-unless you have a recent one of you and your spouse. Make sure that you have your complete full name, date of birth, your home address, home phone number and/or cell phone number. These steps will be extremely helpful in the event of an emergency. The Cherokee County Education Retired Teachers Association extends thank you to Sheriff Shaver and staff for suggesting these tips in saving precious time. After a short business meeting conducted by club president, Billy Wayne Tillery, everyone is invited to stay for a “Dutch-treat” lunch and socialize with other retirees. For additional information, call 256-526-8583.

Visit the beautiful Rock Village, home of some of the best hiking and rock climbing throughout the world. Enjoy fresh air and beautiful scenery. Go to the intersection of U.S. Highway 411 and Highway 68 in Leesburg, turn right, turn left on Cherokee County 36, to the intersection of County Road 36 and County Road 70, turn left and follow the signs.

Visit the historic Cornwall Furnace on Cherokee County Road 92 in Cedar Bluff.
