Ten weeks later, their stock has improved.
For the eighth straight week, Piedmont (10-0) remains the top team in Class 3A. The Bulldogs garnered all 31 first-place votes in the latest poll, released late Tuesday evening.
Piedmont opens the state playoffs at home against J.B. Pennington (4-6) on Friday.
In Class 1A, Cedar Bluff (9-0) held firm at No. 5 for the third straight week. The Tigers open the playoffs at home against Phillips of Bear Creek (5-5) on Friday.
The Collinsville Panthers (8-2), coming off a 33-28 loss to Class 3A White Plains, dropped two places to No. 10 in the Class 1A rankings.
Collinsville also hosts in the first round of the state playoffs. The Panthers will entertain R.A. Hubbard (6-4) on Friday.
In other statewide happenings, a four-point loss to a school in a larger classification cost Marion County its top spot in the final 1A poll.
The Red Raiders’ 21-17 loss to Class 2A Red Bay, allowed Brantley to swing into the No. 1 spot in Class 1A with 27 of the 32 first-place votes. Marion County still received four firsts and dropped to third place with 9-0 Ragland sandwiched between.
In the other five classes, two teams – Class 6A Hoover and Class 4A Oneonta – were unanimous choices as No. 1 in their class, then and now. Class 2A Tanner and 5A Muscle Shoals were both second after Week 1 and moved into the top spot early in the season – after Week 2 for Tanner and Week 4 for Muscle Shoals.
And after T.R. Miller’s loss last week to W.S. Neal, Leeds recaptured the No. 2 spot in Class 3A behind Piedmont for the final two weeks of the season. Either the Green Wave and Bulldogs have been first and second for six of the 10 regular season polls, with Leeds holding No. 1 for the first two weeks and Piedmont taking the top spot ever since.
Class 5A No. 7 St. Paul’s is at No. 9 Eufaula in the only playoff game between ranked opponents this week. There was no AISA poll this week as that group started its playoffs last week, but this week sees, AISA No. 7 Clarke Prep hosting No. 5 Autauga Academy in the Class AA playoff and No. 2 Tuscaloosa Academy hosting No. 8 Fort Dale and No. 3 Lee-Scott at No. 4 Monroe Academy in Class AAA semifinals.
