All retirees of the Cherokee County Educational Association are invited to attend the final monthly meeting of the school year to be held at 11 a.m. at the City Park in Centre. There will be a short business meeting with president Kay Davis. The theme of the meeting is “Picnic in the Park” and members are asked to bring sandwiches, salad or dessert to share with the other retirees. The next meeting will be Wednesday, Sept. 14. Members are asked to invite a retiree to come with them to that meeting. They will receive a newsletter during the summer with additional information. Members should remember to read their Alabama News Journal and be aware of decisions that are being made in Montgomery on behalf of the retirees of the state of Alabama. In observance of National Travel and Tourism Week, May 7 – May 15, 2011, the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce and the Alabama Mountain Lakes Tourist Association (AMLA) will ambush an unsuspecting tourist visiting in Cherokee County for a special recognition and free gifts.

Each year, the North Alabama region entertains millions of visitors and on May 11, one visitor will be named “Tourist of the Day.”

The lucky visitor will be presented with a box of treats from the Morgan-Price Candy Company, a $50 gas giftcard, Cherokee County Postcards, a goody bag filled with items from local businesses, and a certificate declaring them as “Tourist of the Day.”

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System is offering a training session for caregivers from noon until 4 p.m. at Cherokee County Health and Rehabilitation Center in Centre. Call 256-927-3250 for further information.

Kiwanis of Cherokee County meets at noon in the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce office on the campus of Gadsden State Community College-Cherokee. Lunch is available.

The Cherokee County Board of Education meets at 6 p.m. in the central office on Main Street in Centre. The board will meet every Wednesday during the month of May to handle end of the year school business.
