CENTRE – There’s only so many teams that finish their football seasons with a win.

Of course, there’s going to be those teams that win state championships in December, but the 2012 Cherokee County Warriors are among those teams that will have a ‘W’ by their final game.

The Warriors ended their football season on a high note Friday, claiming a 36-14 victory over visiting Hokes Bluff for their first win.

Junior tailback Ty Green tallied 185 yards on 18 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns, while senior quarterback completed 12 of 19 passes for 179 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Warriors (1-8, 1-7 Class 4A, Region 5), who jumped out to a 22-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

Cherokee County coach Tripp Curry said he’s proud of how hard his team has fought through the adversity it’s been presented with this season.

“Every year, I always tell our kids when we get to the playoffs if you don’t win it all, your last game is going to be a loss, so get ready for that. It’s always sad, but this turned out really good, to end on a win like we did,” Curry said.

“It’s easy to quit when things start going wrong. There’s not too many people in the world that can handle the adversity they did, but our practices have been good, our kids have been here, and we’re having fun. Even though it was tough, we ended strong and played really good tonight.”

Green got things going on a 4-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter, giving the Warriors a 6-0 lead.

Young tossed his first touchdown pass of the night to senior receiver Jacob Whitmire later in the first quarter. The connection went for 40 yards and it gave Cherokee County a 12-0 lead.

Young connected with junior receiver Wade Griffith on a 3-yard touchdown pass for the only score of the second quarter, which gave Cherokee County a 19-0 advantage.

Junior kicker Eric Burgess extended the Warrior lead to 22-0 with his 36-yard field goal in the third quarter.

“Our offense was clicking on all cylinders tonight,” Curry said. “(Offensive) Coach (Justin) Taylor did a good job calling the offense tonight. He really kept them off balance.

“Our defense shut them out in the first half, and I was so tickled the defense did good.”

Hokes Bluff (1-8, 0-7) got on the scoreboard later in the third on Christian Beggs’ 31-yard touchdown run. Jonathan Pruett’s extra point made it 22-7 Warriors.

The Eagles crept even closer on senior quarterback Brad Robertson’s 35-yard touchdown toss to Beggs later in the third. Pruett’s PAT trimmed Cherokee County’s advantage to 22-14 at the end of three quarters.

Robertson completed 7 of 19 pass attempts for 133 yards and a touchdown to Beggs. Beggs also led the Eagle rushing attack with 111 yards on 18 carries and a score.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Warriors. Green dashed 56 yards for his second and final touchdown of the night. Whitmire hauled in his second touchdown catch from Young later in the quarter – this one a 24-yarder – for the final.

Curry praised his 13 seniors for the leadership and devotion they’ve given to the Warrior program.

“Our seniors have wanted to win, and they played so hard, but this season it seemed like every two steps forward, we’d take three steps back,” he said. “It just seemed like when it could go wrong, it’s gone wrong, but our seniors didn’t look at it like that. They just don’t look at the negatives. They look at the positives.”
