One week after making history with their first-ever appearance in the Alabama Sportswriters Association football rankings, the Spring Garden Panthers (6-0) moved up a spot to No. 9 in this week’s Class 1A poll. The latest poll was released on Wednesday.

The Panthers put their unbeaten record on the line Friday at No. 10 Collinsville (5-1). Collinsville fell last week at No. 6 Cedar Bluff 26-14.

Speaking of Cedar Bluff, the Tigers (6-0) maintained their No. 6 ranking following their victory over Collinsville. They will host Region 7 foe Donoho (4-2) on Friday.

The Piedmont Bulldogs (6-0) remain atop the Class 3A rankings following their 34-0 victory at Region 5 rival White Plains. The Bulldogs earned 29 first-place votes and a total of 375 points in this week’s poll.

T.R. Miller (6-0) remained No. 2, earning 290 points and the remaining three first-place votes.

Piedmont travels to Blountsville to face Susan Moore (3-3) on Friday.

In other statewide happenings, when Lineville and Clay County merged to become Central of Clay County for this school year, the two schools tried to bring the best of the old into the new.

The new school will attempt to exorcise some of the old in Roanoke on Friday night when Central – ranked No. 2 in Class 4A in this week’s ASWA high school football poll – tries to snap a collective eight-game losing streak against the No. 5 Tigers.

Handley, the returning Class 3A state champion, owned a three-game winning streak against Clay County – with two wins last season including a 3A semifinal victory. The Tigers had also won their last five games and seven of the last 10 against Lineville. According the Alabama High School Football Historical Society (ahsfhs.org), Handley held a collective 53-32-3 advantage over the two schools.

It’s not the only meeting of top five schools as Class 2A, No. 2 Washington County looks to break a three-game losing streak against No. 4 Sweet Water. The host Bulldogs have won eight of the nine meetings in the series, dating back to the 1940s, but the two schools haven’t met since 2003.

All seven of the top-ranked teams remained the same this week with 6A Hoover, 5A Muscle Shoals, 4A Oneonta, 3A Piedmont, 2A Tanner, 1A Marion County and the AISA’s Edgewood Academy.

In addition to Spring Garden at Collinsville, only one other game in the state involves ranked teams playing each other – Class 6A, No. 8 Auburn at No. 9 Central-Phenix City.
