WHITE PLAINS - The Spring Garden Lady Panthers went 4-1 Saturday in the White Plains volleyball tournament. The Lady Panthers (28-17) defeated Faith Christian (25-18, 23-25, 15-10), Ranburne (25-9, 25-11) and Wellborn (24-26, 25-18, 15-8) in pool play.

Spring Garden met White Plains in the semifinals, winning 25-16, 25-17. The Lady Panthers fell to Class 1A, No. 4 Sacred Heart in the championship 22-25, 8-25.

Spring Garden coach Ben Carroll said he was pleased with how well the Lady Panthers performed overall for the day.

"We came out strong," he said. "We played five matches, and it was encouraging to me that they didn't give up. We served and placed the ball well, which is something I talked with our hitters about. We'd won 10 straight matches going into the championship with Sacred Heart, but they had a lot of points that could have gone either way. They got really encouraged and put it to us. They kept us in chase mode."

For the day, Jacqueline Haney tallied 57 digs, 17 aces and four assists. Darby Bryant managed 51 assists, 23 digs, six kills and three aces. Dallas Smith accumulated 22 kills and five blocks.

Haley Motes had 38 kills, 39 digs, six aces and five blocks. Maddy Micha came away with 26 digs and four aces. Emory Reedy contributed six kills, 23 digs and four aces. Madison Sides finished with 10 kills, 42 digs, 15 aces and a block.

The Lady Panthers will now prepare for the Class 1A, Area 13 tournament at Cedar Bluff on Thursday. Spring Garden will face Collinsville following the 4:30 p.m. match between Gaylesville-Cedar Bluff.
