Six area teams receive rankings in first ASWA baseball, softball poll

With the spring sports season now underway, the Alabama Sportswriters Association released its first baseball and softball rankings of the season on Thursday.

Four area baseball teams and two area softball teams received a ranking in their respective classes.

In baseball, defending Class 3A state runner-up Piedmont (2-2) and Class 1A Cedar Bluff (2-1) both come in at No. 4. Class 1A Spring Garden (4-3) slides in at No. 6 and Class 2A Sand Rock (3-3) begins the season at No. 7.

In softball, defending Class 4A state runner-up Cherokee County (1-0) slides in at No. 3, while Class 1A Spring Garden (0-0) comes in at No. 10.

Two other area girls softball teams received consideration for the initial poll: Class 2A Sand Rock (1-1) and Class 1A Collinsville (1-1).
