Six area teams ranked in first ASWA basketball poll

The Alabama Sportswriters Association released its first basketball poll of the season late Wednesday evening. Six area teams (3 boys, 3 girls) are among the top 10 in their respective classes.

Three others (1 boys, 2 girls) are among those receiving consideration.

In Class 1A boys, defending state runner-up Cedar Bluff (2-0) comes in at No. 2. The Tigers travel to Class 3A, No. 6 Piedmont (1-0) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The Collinsville Panthers (2-0) enter the season at No. 6 in the Class 1A boys rankings. Collinsville travels to Class 4A, No. 9 Hokes Bluff (3-0) Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

One other area team receiving consideration for the Class 1A boys rankings is Spring Garden (1-0). The Panthers travel to Southeastern on Thursday at 6 p.m.

In the girls rankings, Class 4A Cherokee County (5-1) slides in at No. 8. The Lady Warriors travel to Saks on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Class 3A Piedmont (3-1) begins the season at No. 10. The Lady Bulldogs will host Cedar Bluff (3-2) on Thursday at 5 p.m.

In Class 1A girls, Collinsville (5-0) also comes in at No. 10. The Lady Panthers travel to Hokes Bluff on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Two other area teams received consideration for this week’s girls rankings: Class 2A Sand Rock (2-2) and Class 1A Spring Garden (3-2).

Sand Rock hosts Cedar Bluff on Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m. Spring Garden hosts Class 4A, No. 3 Jacksonville (4-0) on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m.
