Lady Warrior coach Travis Barnes admitted his team came out a little flatter than he expected on Tuesday, but once the second quarter rolled around, their rhythm returned. The result was a 64-40 win.
Tori Davis netted 19 points and grabbed six rebounds while Jessen Burk scored 16 points (all in the first half) and had four steals to lead the Lady Warriors (5-1).
Barnes attributed the win to the Lady Warriors’ switch from the press to a half-court defense.
“We noticed their offense runs to the right side, so we went half-court and started pushing their offense to the left side of the floor. We kind of shut them down then,” Barnes said.
The Lady Warriors led 18-15 after the first quarter, but then went on a 27-10 run in the second to take a 45-25 advantage into halftime.
“We spread the ball around well, and that makes us harder to defend,” Barnes said. “If you’ve got one or two good players, that’s easy to plan for, but if you’ve got five who can shoot it at any time, that’s hard to defend. It was just an all-around effort. We had a few of our subs come in and play big roles.”
One of those players Barnes was referring to is Emily Perry. She drained a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.
Darbie Rosser also connected on a pair of 3-pointers and ended with 11 points. She also grabbed five rebounds.
Autumn Aloi and Madison Brannon both contributed six points, with Brannon also adding five steals and three assists. Chelsea Ray had four assists.
Katie McGinnis led the Lady Tigers (3-2) with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. Audrianna Hargitt added 11 points, six boards, two steals, an assist and a blocked shot. Hannah Leach had seven points.
“For a quarter-and-a-half, we played with them, but we haven’t got as much experience on the bench right now,” Cedar Bluff coach Joe Carpenter said. “They came in and made some young mistakes. They’ll get over that as the year goes on, but we can’t use that as a crutch to lean on.
“Centre is well-coached. Their kids play extremely hard. It just got away from us in the second quarter. They went on a run and we tried to stop it, but we didn’t have an answer for it.”
