GIVE IT ANOTHER 'TWIRL!' Members of the Cherokee County High School Color Guard practice their twirls and turns as part of their new show this seaon under the direction of Michael Brown, who begins his first season as CCHS Band Director. Band Camp began July 30 on the CCHS practice field.
Michael Brown attended Jacksonville State University where he studied conducting and music education under Dr. Ken Bodiford.
He spent time as a section leader in the world renowned Marching Southerners and was principal trombone in their premiere ensemble, Chamber Winds. He also traveled thousands of miles across the world as a baritone player with the seven time DCI World Champion, “The Cavaliers” from Rosemont, Ill.
After interning with Jill DeGaetano, and Steve Reagan at Gadsden City High School, he feels fully prepared to take Cherokee County to the next level of excellence. With help from Cedrick Boyd, Kyle McNair, Nic Burgess, Alicia Warren, Brandon McDonald, and volunteers from the Band Boosters, Brown began the 2012 Band Camp on July 30 to get our local band ready for a competitive marching season and football games. When walking into the band room, the first noticeable change are 10 words hung on separate doors: outstanding, honest, responsible, patient, disciplined, example, respectful, spirit, encouraging, and organized.
“These signs represent all the things Mr. Brown wants the band to exemplify in the community. It’s amazing to see everybody’s hard work coming together,” says Tabitha Wright, Color Guard Guard instructor.
This year’s show will feature popular selections including “The Air Up There” and they intend to explore heights unknown with songs including: “Dream On” by Aerosmith, “Firework” by Katy Perry and “Defying Gravity” from the Broadway play “Wicked.”
“We are striving to be better than the best. We are striving to be better than ever,” says Wright.”
