Cedar Bluff hosted an 8-team jamboree at Sand Rock on Thursday. The jamboree was scheduled for the Tigers’ home field, but the school’s stadium renovations weren’t completed in time for the event.
Sand Rock was the only county team to claim a win in the jamboree. The Wildcats defeated in-county rival Spring Garden 14-7.
Here’s a brief look at Thursday night’s action.
Ohatchee 14, Gaylesville 13
After a scoreless first quarter, Gaylesville took a 7-0 lead against Ohatchee with just over seven minutes left in the second quarter on junior quarterback Cole Murphy’s 2-yard touchdown run. John David Jennings added the extra point, giving the Trojans a 7-0 advantage.
Ohatchee answered the score on its next possession, as junior running back Tristan Allen scampered 59 yards for a touchdown. Zach Mangum’s point after tied the game at 7 with 4:30 left in the scrimmage.
That was enough time for the Trojans to regain the lead. They marched 65 yards in five plays. Murphy completed 3 of 4 pass attempts on the drive, capped off by his 3-yard scoring toss to senior receiver Malachii Dutton with 39.7 seconds to go. Jennings couldn’t convert on the extra point, but Gaylesville was back in front 13-7.
It took just one play for the Indians to reach the end zone and escape with the win. Senior quarterback Riley Allen connected with Tristan Allen over the middle for a 65-yard score. Mangum’s PAT gave Ohatchee a 14-13 victory.
Fyffe 27, Gaylesville 0
The Trojans didn’t fare well in their second and final scrimmage of the night against Fyffe.
The Red Devil running back tandem of Stacy Bates and Trent Thrash accounted for two touchdowns apiece as Fyffe blanked Gaylesville 27-0. Fyffe fell to Saks 14-7 in its other jamboree action on Thursday.
Saks 14, Sand Rock 7
Sand Rock scored on its opening possession against Saks, marching 65 yards in nine plays capped off by a 4-yard touchdown rush by junior running back Austin Chambers. Dylan Mackey’s extra point gave Sand Rock a 7-0 lead with just over six minutes left in the opening quarter.
Saks appeared as if it would answer on its ensuing drive, but Dylan Mackey intercepted senior quarterback Tim Johnson’s pass at the 5-yard line.
However, Sand Rock gave the ball right back on a Chambers fumble recovered by Demetrius Powell. Powell powered his way to the end zone from 20 yards out. Josh Wilson’s extra point tied the game at 7 with 41.7 ticks left on the first-quarter clock.
Saks marched into Sand Rock territory on its first possession of the second quarter, but Sand Rock’s defensive tandem of Seth Mackey and Aaron Adkins forced a turnover. Mackey caused a fumble, and Adkins recovered to give Sand Rock the ball near midfield.
Sand Rock couldn’t cash the turnover into points, as Powell picked off Dylan Mackey to set Saks up at the Sand Rock 48.
Seven plays later, Saks found the end zone on senior running back Ladarius Young’s 3-yard touchdown run. Wilson’s extra point put Saks in front 14-7 with just 21.3 seconds to go in the scrimmage.
Sand Rock had one last chance to tie the game. A pair of Dylan Mackey completions to senior receiver Stethan Chandler, and a flip-pass from Chandler to Chandler Mackey fell short of the end zone as time expired.
Sand Rock 14, Spring Garden 7
Sand Rock took on Spring Garden in its second scrimmage of the night. The Wildcats fell behind the Panthers 7-0 on senior fullback Forrest Livingston’s 4-yard scoring run. Will Penton’s point after put the Panthers out in front 7-0 with 3:20 left in the opening quarter.
The Wildcats answered on their ensuing possession. Chandler Mackey dashed 17 yards for a touchdown to cap a quick 3-play drive. Dylan Mackey’s extra point knotted the scrimmage at 7 with 47.9 seconds to go in the opening quarter.
The Panthers opened the second quarter by marching down to Sand Rock’s 23-yard line, but Wildcat defender Isaac Arnold intercepted Spring Garden junior quarterback Will Ivey’s pass near the goal line. Arnold returned the ball near the Sand Rock 30, and the Wildcats cashed the turnover into a touchdown.
Four plays later, Chandler Mackey scored his second touchdown of the scrimmage on a 6-yard rush up the middle, giving the Wildcats a 14-7 lead with 6:15 to go in the scrimmage. The score was set up by Dylan Mackey’s 44-yard pass completion to junior receiver Ethan Jimmerson that gave the Wildcats a first-and-goal at the Spring Garden 6.
Spring Garden had one last drive to answer, but ran out of time.
Section 13, Spring Garden 7
Another turnover proved costly for the Panthers in their second scrimmage of the night against Section.
Section’s Harrison Phillips recovered a Spring Garden fumble on its opening possession. Seven plays later, the Lions took an early 7-0 lead on an unusual play. Running back Timothy Martin fumble on a carry right into the waiting arms of Christopher Manning. Manning scored from eight yards away. Alex Hernandez couldn’t connect on the extra point, but the Lions held a 6-0 lead with 8:25 to go in the opening quarter.
Spring Garden was forced to punt on its next possession, but the Lions gave the ball right back on an interception.
Two plays later, Forrest Livingston scored on a 4-yard run. Will Penton’s extra point gave the Panthers a 7-6 lead with 1:27 left in the first quarter.
Late in the first quarter, the Panthers had another turnover that resulted in a Lion touchdown. Dylan Carson scooped up a Will Ivey fumble and dashed 40 yards for the score. Hernandez’s kick made it 13-7 Section with 10:30 to go in the scrimmage.
Ivey was picked off on the Panthers’ next possession by Dustin Martin, but Spring Garden’s defense forced the Lions to punt with five minutes left.
However, Spring Garden could only march down to the Lion 33 before time expired.
Section 3, Cedar Bluff 0
Cedar Bluff and Section wrapped up the jamboree, with the Lions claiming a 3-0 victory.
Section ate up most of the first quarter and part of the second on a 15-play, 83-yard drive. The end result was Alex Hernandez’s 23-yard field goal with 12:40 left in the second quarter.
After a Cedar Bluff punt, Hernandez attempted another field goal, but this time, his 41-yarder fell short.
The Tigers appeared to take the lead with less than a minute remaining on the clock on a 41-yard pass completion from senior quarterback Levi Mintz to senior receiver DeAngelo Hardy in the back of the end zone. However, the play was nullified on a penalty.
Mintz hooked up with Hardy again on a 34-yard connection to give the Tigers a first down at the Lion 12, but Section’s defense came up big on the final four plays of the game. The Lions forced a pair of incomplete passes and sacked Mintz on the other two plays to get the ball back on downs.
Junior quarterback Trent Linderman’s kneel down allowed the Lions to escape with the win.
