Four area teams ranked in final ASWA basketball poll for 2012

With Christmas break beginning for high schools across the state, the final Alabama Sportswriters Association basketball poll for 2012 was released on Thursday. Four area teams are among those ranked in the top 10 in their respective classes, while four others received nominations.

In Class 4A girls, the Cherokee County Lady Warriors (10-2) moved up a spot to No. 8. The Lady Warriors open the Cherokee Invitational at home Thursday against Sand Rock (9-3) at 6:45 p.m.

Speaking of Sand Rock, the Lady Wildcats are still receiving consideration for the Class 2A rankings.

In Class 3A, the Piedmont Lady Bulldogs (9-3) remained at No. 10 in this week’s rankings. Piedmont takes part in the Van Deerman Classic in Jacksonville on Thursday against Ragland at 4:30 p.m.

The Spring Garden Lady Panthers (8-5) dropped two places to No. 9 in the Class 1A rankings. Spring Garden opens the Cherokee Invitational on Thursday against Gaylesville at Cherokee County High School at 4:15 p.m.

Two other area teams continued to receive nominations for the Class 1A girls poll: Cedar Bluff (7-6) and Collinsville (9-2).

Cedar Bluff opens the Cherokee Invitational at Gadsden State-Cherokee Arena against Class 3A, No. 8 Glencoe (8-3) on Thursday at 6:45 p.m.

Collinsville plays Class 2A’s top-ranked team, the Woodland Lady Bobcats (8-0) at 4:15 p.m. in the Cherokee Invitational at Gadsden State-Cherokee Arena on Thursday.

Speaking of Collinsville, the Panther boys (7-1) moved up a spot to No. 3 in the Class 1A boys rankings this week. Collinsville opens the Cherokee Invitational against Class 3A Piedmont on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Gadsden State-Cherokee Arena.

The Cedar Bluff Tigers (7-3) continue to receive consideration for the Class 1A poll. The Tigers open the Cherokee Invitational against Glencoe at Gadsden State-Cherokee Arena at 8 p.m.
