Cedar Bluff Fire Chief Bobby Joe Stinson said the fire had already spread to the attic by the time firefighters arrived and that firefighters had to fight the fire from the outside. Fortunately, they were able to save the fellowship part of the building and no injuries were reported.
Stinson estimated there were some 27 firefighters on the scene and that they fought the fire until 3:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
“I just want to thank everybody involved in trying to put this structure out,” said Stinson. “We were totally exhausted by the time we got this fire put out. We also got called back to this structure because of more hot spots. It was an old church and it was a very, very hot fire.”
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, Stinson said.
