Final ASWA basketball regular season rankings released

The final Alabama Sportswriters Association basketball rankings were released on Thursday, and five area basketball teams are ranked heading into the postseason.

The Collinsville Panthers (24-3) continue to hold the highest ranking of those teams. The Panthers remained steady at No. 2, trailing only top-ranked St. Jude (21-6) in the Class 1A boys poll. Collinsville hosts Gaylesville (4-18) on Friday in the Area 10 tournament semifinals at 5:30 p.m.

The Cedar Bluff Tigers (19-7) moved up a spot to No. 5 this week in the Class 1A poll. The Tigers face Spring Garden (16-12) in the Area 10 tournament on Friday at Collinsville at 7 p.m.

In the girls rankings, Collinsville (21-5) crept into the Class 1A top 10 at No. 10. The Lady Panthers take on Cedar Bluff (13-14) at Spring Garden in the Area 10 tournament semifinals on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Sand Rock Lady Wildcats (18-8) maintained their No. 9 ranking in the Class 2A girls poll. The Lady Wildcats host the Area 11 tournament and open with Westbrook Christian on Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Cherokee County Lady Warriors (21-6) also kept their No. 10 ranking in the Class 4A girls poll. The Lady Warriors host the Area 11 tournament beginning on Thursday against Alexandria at 7:30 p.m.

One other area team continued to receive nominations for the poll: the Class 3A Piedmont Lady Bulldogs (23-6). Piedmont hosts the Area 10 tournament and will take on Weaver on Thursday at 6 p.m.
