ASHVILLE — They say when you're on the road in a tight game, you play for the win instead of overtime. That's exactly what the Piedmont Bulldogs did Friday night at Ashville in their Class 3A Sub-Regional basketball game at Ashville.

Denard Spears' 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short of the mark, allowing Ashville to escape with a 65-63 victory that propels it to the Northeast Regional Tournament in Jacksonville.

Ashville (19-11) plays Pisgah (16-10) at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Piedmont's season comes to an end at 8-21.

Piedmont rallied from a 27-6 deficit early in the second quarter to take a 47-46 lead at the end of the third. The two teams battled back and forth down the stretch, but Ashville was able to hang on for the win.

Spears led all scorers with 30 points. Ty Sparks added 14 points for Piedmont.

Alex Looney led Ashville with 21 points. Damion Bothwell scored 17 points. Ray Harris netted 13 points and Marcellus Brown finished with 12 points.
